Dimitris Papaioannou’s ground-breaking creative direction of the Athens 2004 Opening Ceremony – hailed a “triumph” by Time magazine and The Times of London – is widely considered a high-water mark of large scale spectacle. Born in Athens, Greece in 1964, Dimitris Papaioannou first attracted attention at the age of 19 as a painter, comics artist and illustrator. While still a student at the School of Fine Arts he took the Greek dance scene by storm, exploding the boundaries between theatre, dance and the visual arts, working not only as choreographer and performer, but also in the areas of costume, lighting, make-up and set design.
Co-founder of Edafos Dance Theatre in 1986, he conceived, directed and choreographed all of the company's productions. Edafos radically reshaped the Greek performing arts landscape over its 16 years and 17 works. L’Unità described the company as “a revelation.” “Greece Rediscovered” headlined Le Figaro’s review of Medea, while the New York Times praised the piece for its “striking intensity” and “extraordinary passion.”
Medea (1993) won “Best Choreography” at the Greek National Awards for Dance, while Human Thirst (1999) and For Ever (2001) both garnered “Production of the Year” awards.
Beyond his work with the Edafos Dance Theatre company, Papaioannou has directed operas and large-scale music shows. His latest work, 2 (2006), enjoyed an unprecedented run in the Greek capital, with over 100,000 tickets sold.
In 2005, Dimitris Papaioannou was awarded the Golden Cross of the Order of Honour by the President of the Hellenic Republic for outstanding artistic achievement.
Mε την σύλληψη και σκηνοθεσία της Τελετής Έναρξης των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων της Αθήνας το 2004 («θρίαμβος» σύμφωνα με το περιοδικό Time και τους Times του Λονδίνου), ο Δημήτρης Παπαϊωάννου ανέτρεψε τα δεδομένα στα θεάματα μεγάλης κλίμακας, θέτοντας κατά γενική ομολογία τον πήχη ψηλά.
Γεννημένος στην Αθήνα το 1964, ο Δημήτρης Παπαϊωάννου έγινε αρχικά γνωστός στα 19 του χρόνια με τα comics και την ζωγραφική του. Φοιτητής ακόμη στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών, τάραξε τα νερά του σύγχρονου ελληνικού χορού εξερευνώντας τα όρια ανάμεσα στο θέατρο, τον χορό και τα εικαστικά ως χορογράφος και χορευτής, αλλά και σχεδιάζοντας σκηνικά, κοστούμια, φωτισμούς και μακιγιάζ.
Ιδρυτικό μέλος της Ομάδας Εδάφους το 1986, συνέλαβε, σκηνοθέτησε και χορογράφησε όλες τις παραγωγές της. Η Ομάδα Εδάφους, με 17 έργα στα 16 χρόνια της παρουσίας της, άλλαξε δραστικά το τοπίο των παραστατικών τεχνών στην Ελλάδα. «Αποκάλυψη» αποκάλεσε την Ομάδα Εδάφους η Unità, «η επανανακάλυψη της Ελλάδας» ήταν ο τίτλος της κριτικής του Figaro για την Μήδεια, ενώ η New York Times επαίνεσε το έργο για την «εντυπωσιακή ένταση» και το «εξαιρετικό πάθος» του.
Η Μήδεια (1993) κέρδισε το βραβείο «Καλύτερης Χορογραφίας» στα Κρατικά Βραβεία Χορού, ενώ τα έργα Aνθρώπινη Δίψα (1999) και Για Πάντα (2001) απέσπασαν τα βραβεία «Καλύτερης Παραγωγής».
Εκτός από την δουλειά του με την Ομάδα Εδάφους, ο Παπαϊωάννου έχει σκηνοθετήσει όπερες και μεγάλα μουσικά θεάματα. Το τελευταίο του έργο 2 (2006) γνώρισε πρωτοφανή επιτυχία, πουλώντας πάνω από 100.000 εισητήρια.
Tο 2005, ο Πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας απένημε στον Δημήτρη Παπαϊωάννου τον Χρυσό Σταυρό του Τάγματος της Τιμής τιμώντας τον για εξαιρετικό καλλιτεχνικό επίτευγμα.
