    STILL LIFE on tour

    In October 2015, STILL LIFE was presented in Paris at the Théâtre de la Ville for four sold-out performances, in Bordeaux at the Novart Festival, and in Milan at the CRT.
    The warm reception we received from audiences and critics alike made us very happy! 
    Next stop, Stockholm at Dansens Hus on 5 and 6 November 2015New STILL LIFE tour cities are now being added for 2016.

    PRIMAL MATTER on tour

    PRIMAL MATTER was presented at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy, in an edition adapted specially for this historic stage, as part of the 68th Ciclo di Spettacoli Classici.
    The work has also been invited to appear in the autumn of 2016 at Lyon's Biennale de la danse, and at London's Dance Umbrella.

    We are excited to announce the first tour dates of Dimitris Papaioannou’s latest work, STILL LIFE, created at and produced by the Onassis Cultural Centre - Athens
    in 2014.
    We will be visiting France, Italy, Sweden, Chile, Brazil and Belgium, and giving 10 performances in our home town — Athens.

    We are proud and excited to announce that the opening segment from STILL LIFE SISYPHUS will be presented in the US for the first time by Robert Wilson at this year’s Watermill Center Summer Benefit Gala in New York, on 26 July. Dimitris will also be staying on at Watermill to workshop new material with the Summer Program participants. See photos from last summer's performance at the Watermill Center Benefit, Dimitris' solo with chairs from MEDEA performed by Evangelia Randouhere. We hope to see you in New York!

    Inspiration from NOWHERE

    The central scene from Dimitris Papaioannou's NOWHERE (2009) formed the basis for the first scene of Akram Khan's Dust, created this year for the English National BalletAs noted by Akram Khan in the printed programme, "The opening scene of Dust is inspired by the 'body mechanic system' originally created by Dimitris Papaioannou."

    cavafy13.com / C.P Cavafy, Lena Platonos & Dimitris Papaioannou

    In 2010, Lena Platonos created a song cycle for 13 poems by C.P. Cavafy and asked Dimitris to design the staging and visuals for its first presentation to the public. Five concerts were given at the Pallas Theatre in Athens in December that same year.

    In 2013, in honour of the 150th anniversary of the poet’s birth, Kyriacos Karseras put together a site where videos of the full live concert and all 13 stage visuals are now freely available, along with texts about Cavafy and notes by the artists - cavafy13.com

    PEN American Center / Cavafy Tribute in New York

    The PEN American Center invited Dimitris to take part in its Tribute to C.P. Cavafy, at The Town Hall in New York City on 18 November 2013. He brought the evening to a close with the finale from PRIMAL MATTER, performing with Michael Theophanous, and also presented a video projection from K.K., his 2010 staging of 13 Cavafy poems set to music by Lena Platonos. Dimitris joined André Aciman, Michael Cunningham, Mark Doty, Olympia Dukakis, Craig Dykers (of Snøhetta), Edmund Keeley, Daniel Mendelsohn, Orhan Pamuk and Kathleen Turner on stage for the evening. More information here.

    CLOCKWORK / collaboration with the SISTERS circus company

    The Swedish SISTERS circus company (Valia Beauvieux, Mikkel Hobitz Filtenborg and Pablo Rada Moniz) invited Dimitris to collaborate with them to create CLOCKWORK. Following residencies together in Stockholm, Strasbourg and Barcelona, the work had its pre-première at the Teatro Ateneu in Barcelona on 26 and 27 October 2013, and its official première at Le Manège de Reims, Scène National between 6-9 November 2013. Watch the show trailer on Vimeo here.

    MEDEA(2) / Evangelia Randou performs at the Watermill Center in New York

    selected the solo with chairs from Dimitris Papaioannou's MEDEA(2) for his Watermill Center's 20th Annual Summer Benefit, "Devil's Heaven", held on 27 July 2013. Evangelia Randou performed the ten-minute solo twenty times in a loop on the main platform in the Center's grounds. Guests included Marina Abramović, Lucinda Childs and Lady Gaga. Evangelia repeated the performance on 11 August for Discover Watermill 2013, when the Center opened its doors to the public.

    INSIDE / life-size video installation at the Kalamata International Dance Festival 2013

    is a large-scale on-stage experiment by Dimitris Papaioannou that took place in a room set inside the Pallas Theatre in central Athens in the Spring of 2011. On 25 July 2013, specially for Kalamata International Dance Festival, an unedited six-hour video documentation of INSIDE was projected life size and in high definition onto a large screen installed inside the Castle Amphitheatre. You can watch 30 minutes of extracts from INSIDE on Vimeo here. For more information, you can find INSIDE on the official KIDF Website / Facebook / Tumblr.

    PRIMAL MATTER / 2013 performances in Athens and Edinburgh

    Dimitris Papaioannou's PRIMAL MATTER has completed a run of 26 performances at the Athens Festival 2013 (1 June - 14 July). Joined on stage by Michael Theophanous this year, Dimitris also presented the show in March as a parallel event of the exhibition From Death to Death and Other Small Tales: Masterpieces from the Scottish National Gallery of Art and the D.Daskalopoulos Foundation, at The Corn Exchange in Edinburgh.

    Dimitris Papaioannou's 12-page Greek-language comic HEART-SHAPED EARTH was first published in Babel (Issue 145, pp. 42-53) in 1993.
